RESEARCH PROJECTS

  1. Evaluation of a new assay, the Foam Stability Index (FSI) – Test for the Prenatal Evaluation of Fetal Pulmonary Maturity. This study was taken to the stage of commercial viability and led to the development of the Lumadex-FSI test which was marketed worldwide by Beckman Instruments.  This bedside assay is currently one of the most widely used tests of its kind in the world.
  2. The Establishment of the 1st private (non University-based) In vitro Fertilization Program in the United States.
  3. In Vitro Sperm Capacitation and Transcervical Intrauterine Insemination for Treating Non-organic Female Infertility. This process first introduced and described by Dr. Sher et al in 1984 has gained worldwide acceptance as a method of choice for the treatment of infertility unrelated to female organic pelvic disease.
  4. Identification of the sonographic appearance of the endometrium in the late proliferative phase as an index of outcome in patients undergoing in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF/ET). This study, the first of its kind, firmly identified ultrasound sonographic appearance prior to egg retrieval as an important prognostic variable in assessing outcome following IVF/ET.
  5. The development of unique ultrasound technology which improves sonographic resolution by a factor of 5 and reduces noise by 95%. This project developed by Dr. Sher and Nathan Cohen, Ph.D., of the Department of Radio Astronomy at Boston University was recently patented.  The method, which is being heralded as a major breakthrough in the field of diagnostic imaging, has the potential of revolutionizing the ultrasound industry with enormous commercial potential.
  6. The development of an immortal human granulosa cell line for the purpose of assessing the biopotency of endogenous and exogenous gonadotropins, for toxicologic studies, and for the genesis of ovarian steroids in culture. This study conceived by Dr. Sher and pioneered by Janice Brothers, Ph.D., is under patent review and has significant commercial applications.  It represents the first successful attempt at maintaining one cell line of human granulosa cells, to date.
  7. An in-depth evaluation of the effect of autoimmune antibodies on implantation following in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer. This study examined the incidence of antiphospholipid antibody (APA) seropositivity in IVF candidates and the potential effect on pregnancy rates in APA seropositive individuals.

  14. A prospective, randomized, evaluation of Heparin-Immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy on implantation and ongoing pregnancy rates following In Vitro Fertilization in Antiphospholipid Antibody (APA) positive women with increased peripheral blood natural killer cell activity.
